8 Ways Unclean Air Ducts Can Impact Indoor Air Quality And Your Health
With recent studies coming to light on the ways that air pollution and poor air quality can affect our health, we look at 8 key points that highlight the dangers of dirty and unclean commercial air conditioning duct systems.
Air pollution and poor indoor air quality is quickly becoming a topic of conversation amongst researchers around the world.
A recent study conducted in China, yet relevant across the globe, has shown that a staggering 95% of the world population is breathing unsafe air. The most worrying finding was that air pollution and toxic air caused a ‘huge’ reduction in intelligence with significant decreases amongst test scores in both language and arithmetic. The equivalent impact on the average person was the loss of one years worth of education.
Xi Chen at Yale School of Public Health in the US stated “We know the effect is worse for the elderly, especially those over 64, and for men, and for those with low education. If we calculate [the loss] for those, it may be a few years of education.” “Polluted air can cause everyone to reduce their level of education by one year, which is huge.”
The latest findings contribute to previous studies that found air pollution harms cognitive performance in students, however this study was the first to study a broader group of men and women of all ages.
The study has found the longer people are subjected to dirty air, the greater the damage to intelligence. Language ability showed the greatest impact and men were more harmed than women. Researchers believe the impact on men stemmed from the differences between the way male and female brains work.

What Can We Do To Reduce The Impact Of Toxic Indoor Air?
One of the major areas of concern is lack of, or no maintenance of Residential and Commercial HVAC Systems. Commercial air conditioning duct systems or AC duct systems are designed to produce large-scale cooling over a wide-area. Many commercial air conditioning duct systems are often installed and left to run for the majority of the day, especially in Shopping Centres, Supermarkets, Universities, Airports and Office Buildings to name but a few. These systems are often a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ and inspection, cleaning or the thought of potential hazards within the systems simply do not come to the minds of busy Centre Management staff or Building Managers.
What Are The Warning Signs And What Should I Be Mindful Of?ย Below, we look at 8 key concerns or facts regarding dirty and unclean air-conditioning duct systems.
Deep-Clean Your Air Conditioning Duct System To Remove Contaminants
As a general guide we recommend that air conditioning duct systems are inspected at set intervals and deep-cleaned at approximately 6-8 year intervals subject to their being no major construction, roadwork or infrastructure upgrades within nearby or surrounding areas.
SafeAir technicians would advise Centre Managers and Building Managers in Shopping Centres, Supermarkets, Universities and Education or Training Centres, Office Buildings, Government Public Facilities and Office Buildings, Airports, Entertainment and Leisure Centres as well as Food Retailers to inspect their system and contact a suitable duct cleaning contractor for cleaning.
